The wide receiver position has become one of the most important positions in the National Football League with offenses now deploying pass-heavy schemes. The growth and talent development within the high school and college ranks have in turn risen exponentially. Notable college programs claim their respective schools are “Wide Receiver U.”
The term Wide Receiver U refers to college programs known for having the secret formula to producing NFL talent at the wide receiver position. Schools chosen to gather data breaking down not only the receivers drafted but also their success in the league have shown a consistent ability to develop professional talent. Relevant schools researched include The University of Alabama, Ohio State University, Louisiana State University, The University of Southern California, and The University of Texas.
Data shown within the split bar chart is taken over a 20 year time frame dating back to 2004. A Pro Bowl wide receiver is an athlete that made the all-star team within their conference while an All-Pro takes it a step further being one of the top four receivers in the entire league.
The numbers show LSU being the most successful in producing high quality wide receiver talent over the last 20 years and making a strong claim to being Wide Receiver U. Former Tigers currently in the NFL include stars such as Justin Jefferson, Ja’Marr Chase, Malik Nabers, and Brian Thomas.
Although USC saw fewer wide receivers drafted than Ohio State, having more Pro-Bowl athletes strengthens the Trojans’ claim ahead of the Buckeyes. The University of Alabama under the dominant tutelage of Nick Saban has become an NFL talent factory yet falls short in total number of wide receivers drafted. While The University of Texas is most certainly a blue-chip program, the school serves as the outlier in the data gathered.
In this audio story we will rank which school is truly Wide Receiver U.
